Creativity

Like many who work in the creative sector, I tried my hand at a variety of artistic projects before deciding to concentrate on just one. Thus I learned to play instruments, juggle, work in sculpture and become a passionate photographer before making a resolution to study architecture at the Graz University of Technology (TU). While I was a student, I also worked as a crane operator, fork lift driver in a paper factory, barkeeper, freelance photographer (with a focus on theater, nudes and architecture), film director for an ad and in the event management and sponsoring departments of a marketing agency. One of my favorite side jobs was to provide the acoustic background to a number of different events as a classic, vinyl-toting DJ. Since then I have built up an arsenal of two sound systems and peripheral equipment that enables me to rock the occasional summer party with groove, funk and nu jazz.

Architecture

In autumn 2000, as I neared the end of my studies, I had the opportunity to work as an architect in the architectural office of the renowned Klaus Kada in Graz. Integrated in a young and motivated team, I contributed to the planning of the Grazer Stadthalle (trade fair and exhibition center) and continued working through to 2002 when I completed my studies and received my diploma. In 2003 I went from one star architect to the next and during my tenure in the office of GĂŒnther Domenig I specialized in 3D visualization.

In early 2007 I passed the civil engineering exam and have since been a member of the Österreichischer Architektenkammer (Austrian Chamber of Architects). In addition to realizing a number of commissioned projects for various architects, I have since then also completed my own projects.

Since the beginning of 2008 I have been working as a project director in the architectural office LOVE, one of the most successful young new offices, contributing my skills to the realization of a variety of projects.

Living Rooms

In 2002 my friends and I founded the architect network LIVING ROOM, a kind of start-up center for architects to create. During the first few years we were active as the host of a diverse array of cultural events, organizing architecture projects, and expanding our network across a number of creative disciplines. Our architecture competition, which was a public competition complete with a board of jurors (“Architektursport 2006”), attracted attention throughout the country. Other notable projects include the “Kinder erforschen eine Stadt” (Children Discover the City) that gave city planners a wake-up call, and the request for student proposals for “Another Brick – Design mit Ziegel” (Another Brick: Designing with Tiles). Since 2006 we have been operating “gries 40”, an open studio for architects.

Beginning summer 2008 we will cooperate with the international network “The BusinessClass.Net” to provide 10 plug-and-play work spaces, an area for model-building, conference space, lounge and seminar seating, and much more for temporary use by freelance creative professionals.

The future will certainly be a continuation of this bubbling activity, with organized events, exhibitions and architecture projects that will enrich our local architectural and cultural landscape and bring fun and excitement back to architecture.

Networking

The numerous experiences I’ve had as part of my profession and my creative endeavors have enabled me to build a network of valuable contacts and great friendships. For several years now I have been practicing what is currently thrown around as the buzz word “networking”: to bring people together for projects and events and create links between designers, musicians, theater groups, architects, artists and the business and industrial sectors.
